    Written by Brett Linton

For the week ending January 23, 2016, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,670,000 net tons of raw steel, a 1.1 percent increase over the previous week but a 7.6 percent decrease over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 69.8 percent, up from 69.1 percent last week but down from 76.4 percent this time last year.

The last time weekly raw steel production was this high was the week ending October 17, 2015 when 1,675,000 tons were produced at a capacity utilization rate of 70.1 percent.
