Weekly Raw Steel Production: Slight Increase Over Last Week

For the week ending October 22, 2016, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,597,000 net tons of raw steel, a 0.4 percent increase over the previous week but a 2.0 percent decrease over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 67.3 percent, up from 67.0 percent last week but down from 68.1 percent this time last year.
Estimated total raw steel produced for 2016 YTD is reported to be 71,950,000 tons, down 1.9 percent from the 73,322,000 tons produced during the same period in 2015. The average capacity utilization rate for 2016 YTD is estimated to be 71.5 percent, down from 71.7 for 2015 YTD.
