    Weekly Raw Steel Production Starts Year at 1.68 Million Tons

    For the week ending January 7, 2017, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated the U.S. steel industry produced 1,684,000 net tons of raw steel, a 5.8 percent increase over the previous week and a 4.8 percent increase over the revised rate from the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate for steel production is 71.0 percent, up from 67.1 percent last week and up from 68.7 percent this time last year.

    Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: Northeast at 214,000 tons, up 9,000 tons. Great Lakes at 662,000 tons, up 15,000 tons. Midwest at 164,000 tons, up 1,000 tons. South at 578,000 tons, up 60,000 tons. West at 66,000 tons, up 7,000 tons. Total production was 1,684,000 tons, up 92,000 tons.
