    Weekly Raw Steel Production Dips

    Domestic raw steel production totaled 1,762,000 net tons for the week ending Aug. 5, down 0.4 percent from the previous week, but up 6.3 percent from the same week last year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington. Mill capability utilization for the Aug. 5 week averaged 75.6 percent, a significant improvement from the 70.9 percent rate in early August 2016.

    Adjusted year-to-date production through Aug. 5 was 53,870,000 net tons, an increase of 2.7 percent from the same period last year. Year to date, mills operated at an average rate of 74.5 percent, up from 72.4 percent in the 2016 period.
