U.S Raw Steel Production Down 1.5 Percent

U.S. raw steel production dipped below 1.8 milllion tons for the first time in a month. Steel production for the week ending March 31 totaled 1,776,000 net tons, a 3.5 percent increase from the same period last year but down 1.5 percent from the previous week. The mill capability utilization rate for the March 31 week averaged 76.2 percent, down from 77.4 percent the prior week, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington.
Adjusted year-to-date producton through March 31 totaled 22,592,000 net tons at a capability utilization rate of 75.4 percent. That’s up 1.0 percent from 22,369,000 tons in the same period last year when the capability utilization was 74.6 percent.
