    U.S Raw Steel Production Up Last Week

    Steel production for the week ending May 19 totaled 1,775,000 net tons, a 3.3 percent increase from the same period last year, and up 1.6 percent from the previous week. The mill capability utilization rate for the May 19 week averaged 75.7 percent, up from 74.5 percent the prior week and 73.7 percent the prior year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute.Raw steel capability utilization, on average for all types of production, remains below the peak for the year in March of 78.7 percent. Some flat-rolled mills reportedly are operating above the 80 percent level.

    Adjusted year-to-date producton through May 19 totaled 35,024,000 net tons at a capability utilization rate of 75.5 percent. That’s up 1.8 percent from 34,406,000 tons in the same period last year when the capability utilization was 74.3 percent.
