    U.S Steel Production Up Nearly 2% for Year

    Steel production for the week ending May 26 totaled 1,789,000 net tons, a 4.1 percent increase from the same period last year, and up 0.8 percent from the previous week. The mill capability utilization rate for the May 26 week averaged 76.3 percent, up from 75.7 percent the prior week and 73.7 percent the prior year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute. Raw steel capability utilization for the year peaked in March at 78.7 percent. 

    Adjusted year-to-date producton through May 26 totaled 36,813,000 net tons at a capability utilization rate of 75.6 percent. That’s up 1.9 percent from 36,124,000 tons in the same period last year when the capability utilization was 74.3 percent.
