    Raw Steel Production Dips 1.9 Percent

    Steel production for the week ending June 2 totaled 1,755,000 net tons, a 1.7 percent increase from the same period last year, but down 1.9 percent from the previous week. The mill capability utilization rate for the June 2 week averaged 74.9 percent, down from 76.3 percent the prior week but up slightly from 74.0 percent the prior year, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute. Raw steel capability utilization for the year peaked in March at 78.7 percent. 

    Adjusted year-to-date producton through June 2 totaled 38,568,000 net tons at a capability utilization rate of 75.5 percent. That’s up 1.9 percent from 37,850,000 tons in the same period last year when the capability utilization was 74.3 percent.
