Active Gas & Oil Rig Counts Up in September

The U.S. active rig count, an indicator of oil country tubular goods demand, increased this week, according to oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The number of active U.S. rigs rose by 7 to 1,055, with oil rigs up 7 to 867 rigs, gas rigs unchanged at 186 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 2 rigs. Compared to this time last year, the 1,055 count is up 119 rigs, with oil rigs up 118, gas rigs unchanged, and miscellaneous rigs up 1. The Canadian rig count rose by 22 to 226 rigs, with oil rigs up 15 to 148 rigs, gas rigs up 7 to 78 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0. Compared to last year, the 226 count is up 14 rigs, with oil rigs up 36, gas rigs down 22, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged. See the second graph below for a history of active Canadian rig counts.
