    Rotary Rig Counts Remain Positive

    The U.S. active rotary rig count, an indicator of oil country tubular goods demand, declined slightly week over week, according to oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The number of active U.S. rigs fell by 3 to 1,076, with oil rigs up 2 to 887 rigs, gas rigs down 5 to 189 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0 rigs. Compared to this time last year, the 1,076 count is up 147 rigs, with oil rigs up 138, gas rigs up 9, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged.     The Canadian rig count declined by 5 to 199 rigs, with oil rigs down 5 to 119 rigs, gas rigs unchanged at 80 rigs, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged at 0. Compared to last year, the 199 count is down 23 rigs, with oil rigs up 8, gas rigs down 31, and miscellaneous rigs unchanged. See the second graph below for a history of active Canadian rig counts.
