Active Gas & Oil Rig Counts Recovering

The U.S. active rotary rig count, an indicator of oil country tubular goods demand, increased this week, according to oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The number of active U.S. rigs rose by 9 to 1,059, with oil rigs up 10 and gas rigs down 1. Compared to this time last year, the 1,059 count is up 112 rigs, with oil rigs up 103 and gas rigs up 9. The Canadian rig count rose by 23 to 232 rigs, with oil rigs up 18 and gas rigs up 5. Compared to last year, the 232 count is down 106 rigs, with oil rigs down 74 and gas rigs down 32. See the second graph below for a history of active Canadian rig counts.
