Steel Import License Data in April

Updated steel import license data was released Tuesday evening, reporting new March license data up slightly over last week to 2.79 million tons, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. These figures would be above the three-month moving average (3MMA, through final January data), but below the 12-month moving average (12MMA).
When removing the semi-finished products from the data, the finished steel import levels drop to just over 2 million net tons, below both the 3MMA and 12MMA.
April license data is trending towards 3.57 million tons, which would be a significant increase over March. Imports of finished products are at 2.35 million tons. It is still early in the month, so we advise readers to take the April figures lightly.
