Active Gas & Oil Rig Counts in May

The U.S. active rotary rig count, an indicator of oil country tubular goods demand, decreased this week, according to oilfield services company Baker Hughes. The number of active U.S. rigs fell by 2 to 988, with oil rigs down 2 and gas rigs unchanged. Compared to this time last year, the 988 count is down 57 rigs, with oil rigs down 39, gas rigs down 16, and miscellaneous rigs down 2. The Canadian rig count had a change of pace this week, increasing by 2 rigs to 63 rigs, with oil rigs up 5 and gas rigs down 3. Compared to last year, the 63 count is down 16 rigs, with oil rigs down 10 and gas rigs down 6. See the second graph below for a history of active Canadian rig counts.
