Mill Capacity Utilization Drops to 78.7 Percent

Raw steel output by U.S. mills declined again in the week ending Dec. 7. Production totaled 1,821,000 net tons at a capability utilization rate of 78.7 percent, down 0.8 percent from the previous week and down 2.1 percent compared with the same week last year when utilization was at 79.4 percent, reported the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Adjusted year-to-date production through Dec. 7 totaled 90,740,000 net tons at an average mill utilization of 80.1 percent–up 1.9 percent from 2018 when the year-to-date utilization rate was 78.2 percent.
