    Written by Tim Triplett

After a brief pause in late August, raw steel production resumed its upward trajectory, rising again for the 12th time in the past 13 weeks. Raw steel output by U.S. mills totaled 1,428,000 net tons in the week ending Sept. 5, with the mills at an average utilization rate of 63.7 percent. Production in the Sept. 5 week was up 3.3 percent from the prior week when the utilization rate was 61.7 percent, reported the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Adjusted year-to-date production through Sept. 5 totaled 53,269,000 net tons at an average utilization rate of 65.9 percent. That’s down 20.2 percent from the same period last year when the utilization rate was 80.6 percent, AISI said.
