Final Thoughts
Written by John Packard
Tomorrow (Wednesday), we will host one of our SMU Community Chat Webinars with Rick Preckel of Preston Pipe and Michael Cowden of SMU. The two will discuss the energy segment and how higher oil prices will impact oil well drilling, use of line pipe and other OCTG products, and how quickly we may see demand rise for hot rolled and plate steels. Michael will also discuss what SMU is following right now and current spot prices based on our latest survey results. All SMU Community Chat Webinars are free to anyone who wants to listen in, and you can register by clicking here. The webinar will be held on March 3 at 11 AM ET (10 AM CT, 9 AM MT and 8 AM PT).
In my opinion, the United States will soon join the rest of the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with a special emphasis on carbon. The steel industry is a carbon-intensive segment of the economy and anyone associated with the industry (manufacturers, distributors, etc.) will have to learn how “Clean Steel” and the ways of managing the environment through “Carbon Border Taxes” and other means are going to impact the way companies do business.
