    Written by David Schollaert

U.S. raw steel production edged down for the second straight week. Production by U.S. mills was estimated at 1,858,000 net tons in the week ending Oct. 9, while the average utilization rate was still a very strong 84.2%, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Output was down by 0.7% compared to the week prior when production was estimated at 1,872,000 net tons and average utilization was 84.8%. Last week’s production total represents a 19.9% increase from year-ago levels, when output was 1,549,000 net tons and utilization was 70.1%. The market was at the time still recovering from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
