Steel Technologies Growing in Alabama
Written by Laura Miller
Steel sheet processor Steel Technologies LLC is expanding its campus in Decatur, Ala., to produce steel blanks to be used in the automotive, agricultural, and consumer goods markets.
The initial expansion plan has already secured a commitment for approximately 50,000 tons of coil and blank processing, according to a LinkedIn post from the company. A second expansion is also being considered.
Steel Technologies has partnered with nearby sheet producer Nucor Steel Decatur, which operates an electric arc furnace (EAF) with an annual capacity of 2.5 million tons.
“We’ll be blanking out parts just a few miles from the steel furnace — producing finished blanks — and then pushing the scrap right back so Nucor can use it in the furnace,” the company said.
Steel Technologies’ Decatur campus currently offers multi-blanking, cut-to-length, and slitting capabilities.
Headquartered in Louisville, Ky., Steel Technologies operates approximately 30 locations throughout North America, shipping more than 3.8 million tons of product each year. Since 2010 it has been owned by NuMit LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between Nucor and Mitsui & CO (USA) Inc. But it operates as an independent business.
